The fact that This Is the End even exists is amazing to me. Based on some short film that Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel made shortly after the filming of Knocked Up, This Is the End is the type of film that you and your buddies want to make just to have a laugh at yourselves… only everyone that is in this movie is famous… and hilarious. It’s hard to believe that so much talent was assembled in one place to essentially have a good time and make a stupid movie… one of the stupidest out there. Despite everything working against this film, its complete lack of ego and ability to not take anything too seriously works. Irreverence is always welcome, and This Is the End is nothing if not irreverent.

Seth Gordon has been one my favorite comedic directors ever since he decided to film video game nerds arguing about high scores with King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. His follow up feature, after some TV shows, was the delightfully bitter Horrible Bosses. Sadly, Gordon’s latest film, which attempt to capture the kooky charisma of Melissa McCarthy fresh off of her Bridesmaids’ success, is regrettably not nearly as good as those initial efforts. Identity Thief has its moments, but it simply doesn’t have the same punch as some of Gordon’s other work. Mostly, it’s because of the tired and stupid premise that never actually pans out.

The film is about Sandy Bigelow Patterson, a dumbass who gets conned into giving all of his information to some heavyset chick in Florida...

A Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn buddy comedy… uhh… who wanted that? At best I can imagine four people around the U.S. going, “That would be awesome!” Two of them are Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson themselves. Even more disappointing? It’s a PG-13 buddy comedy, which is actually more like a giant commercial for Google than anything else.

The film follows a pair of losers, aka salesman, around until they lose their jobs. From there, their pointless lives become a cacophony of rapid-fire conversations and unfunny quips as they attempt to become interns at Google. Why would they do that? Well, there are permanent jobs available to whoever kicks ass at the intern competition, a ridiculous contest that pits interns against interns...

You know… I was essentially done with the Hangover franchise after the sequel. That bastard sequel and its scene by scene mimicry of the first film made me actually hate the first film. Of course, it could have been worse… Hangover III could have been Hangover II. As amazing as it is, the crapitude of The Hangover Part III actually made me appreciate Part II so much more. As I sat in the theater watching this fuck-filled film of blah, I was actually wishing to see a monkey gnawing on a priest’s boner or some sort of tranny humor. Instead, what I got was a whole lot of jack shit masquerading as a sequel. Can you say cash grab?
